Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT keypads and intercoms fall into several distinct product families, and getting the wrong replacement means either a mismatched mounting footprint or lost functionality you didn’t know you had.

The Q.BO series (Q.BO Touch, Q.BO WiFi) uses a 110mm x 110mm surface-mount backplate with a single RJ45 pass-through for data and low-voltage power. The THALIA series (THALIA P, THALIA A) is the older standby, still common on Miami Beach installations from 2015-2020, with a 90mm x 140mm footprint and hardwired 24V AC terminal block. The COMBO units (THALIA COMBO, Q.BO COMBO) integrate keypad and intercom in one housing; these require checking whether your existing unit has the proximity reader module installed, because the COMBO housing ships with or without it and the wiring harness differs.

To identify yours: open the keypad face and photograph the label inside the housing. The part number starts with R915000 for Q.BO variants or R915200 for THALIA. Measure the cutout if it’s flush-mounted; a THALIA forced into a Q.BO opening leaves a 10mm gap on one side that salt air will exploit within a season.

The aftermarket unit matches the terminal layout and mounting pattern but does not carry BFT’s firmware for the CLOUD2GO app integration; for Q.BO WiFi models, that usually matters, and we flag it before quoting.

Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

• Keypad accepts codes but gate doesn’t move. The keypad’s output relay is closing, but the signal isn’t reaching the control board. Often the two-conductor low-voltage run has corroded at the junction box, especially in Miami Beach where underground PVC conduits fill with brackish water after heavy tides.
• Intercom button works, but voice is garbled or one-way only. The speaker and microphone share a common ground in BFT intercom stations; when that ground lifts due to salt corrosion at the terminal block, you get half-duplex audio that sounds like a bad phone connection.
• Backlight flickers or dies entirely. The LED driver circuit runs warm and is potted in epoxy on OEM units. In Florida heat, that potting cracks after four to six years, letting humidity reach the SMD components. The keypad still functions in daylight; owners notice only at night.
• Proximity reader stops recognizing fobs. The 125kHz coil antenna in THALIA P units degrades when the housing seal fails. Miami Beach’s salt fog accelerates this; we’ve replaced three on Alton Road properties where the reader worked fine in March and failed by August.
• Gate opens randomly without code entry. This is the dangerous one. Water intrusion into the keypad housing can bridge the relay contacts, causing phantom activation. If your gate has opened uncommanded, disable the keypad at the control board and call us.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

The range depends on three things: whether the existing mounting box is reusable, whether the low-voltage run needs replacement, and whether your BFT control board requires a factory reset to pair with the new unit. We quote the full installed price in writing before starting, under Haven Standard Clause 1. That price includes the part, labor, programming, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the new keypad fails within a year, we replace it at no charge, including any repeat labor.

Every visit leaves a documented photo record: the old unit’s part number, the wiring termination before and after, and the limit-switch or program settings we confirmed. Under Clause 4, you get a copy before we leave.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one safe thing an owner can check: verify that the low-voltage transformer at the control board is outputting 24V AC. If it’s dead, the keypad and intercom are starved, not broken. That’s a $40 transformer, not a $400 keypad.

Everything else belongs to a technician. BFT keypads and intercoms connect to line-voltage-derived 24V circuits that share ground with the gate motor; a miswired replacement can backfeed 120V into a 24V data line and destroy the control board. The proximity reader coil requires proper shielding termination or you’ll get intermittent fob reads that waste a month of troubleshooting. And if your gate has opened uncommanded, this is an active safety issue, not a weekend project.
