Identification matters because Elite changed its keypad connector pinout between the 2012 and 2018 production runs. The earlier units use a 4-pin Molex; post-2018 units switched to a 6-pin JST. Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing

• Keypad accepts codes intermittently or not at all. The membrane switch beneath the buttons corrodes from salt air, particularly on east-facing gates within three blocks of the beach. We see this on Alton Road properties where the morning dew carries enough chloride to etch the contacts over two to three years.
• Gate opens without any code entered. This usually means the loop detector has failed in the “closed” position, telling the control board a vehicle is present when none is. Elite’s early-loop detectors are particularly prone to this after lightning storms, which Miami Beach gets more of than most owners track.
• Intercom or call button is dead, but the gate still opens with a remote. The telephone entry module has lost power or its telephone line connection. On the Classic series, check for a flashing red LED on the main board - steady red means power good, flashing means communication fault.
• Motor runs but gate doesn’t move, or moves a few inches and stops. The limit switches inside the Elite operator have drifted or the control board isn’t reading them. We reset these with a digital level and photograph the final position under Clause 4 of The Haven Standard.
• Keypad display is dim, flickering, or showing garbled characters. The 12-volt transformer inside the Elite housing is degrading. In Miami Beach’s heat, these transformers run at the edge of their thermal rating; we upgrade to a higher-temp-rated equivalent when we replace them.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground and a hard stop. An owner can check whether the Elite keypad’s LED is lit, whether the GFCI feeding the operator has tripped, and whether the telephone line (if used) still carries dial tone. Those three checks eliminate about 30% of the calls we get.

Everything past that involves line-voltage wiring, low-voltage control circuits, and in some cases 120-volt AC inside a metal housing that may be wet from the last rain. Elite’s control boards store capacitor charge even when unplugged.
